Having Dual SIM means you can have two numbers on one iPhone.

What is Dual SIM and eSIM for iPhone?

A Dual SIM iPhone has both a physical SIM card and an eSIM. Just like a traditional SIM card, an eSIM stores the data your device needs to use the EE network. But, where you insert a SIM card into your device, an eSIM is downloaded directly on to your device.

If your iPhone has Dual SIM you can:

  • Have two phone numbers and two different plans on one iPhone
  • Get a local SIM plan while travelling abroad without swapping SIMs
  • Have a plan on another network, like your work number (only available on unlocked iPhones)

Which iPhone models are Dual SIM?

All iPhone models from XS onwards (XS, 11 12, SE etc).

How can I get an eSIM for my iPhone?

To order a new or replacement eSIM pack you can:

You can also get a new line for your eSIM if you want a second number, or you can order an eSIM pack for your existing line that you currently use with a physical SIM.

How do I set up an eSIM line on my iPhone?

You’ll need an internet connection to set up your eSIM.

If you’ve been sent a paper QR code, scan it and the information stored in it will allow us to add the eSIM to your phone safely and securely.

Here’s how to set up your eSIM line with a QR code:

  1. Go to Settings > Mobile Data
  2. Select Add Data Plan
  3. Scan the QR code on your eSIM pack with your camera - when it’s recognised you can confirm by pressing the Add Data Plan button

As part of the set up you'll be given the option to assign a name to each line and also choose what lines are used by default for data and for calls and voice messages. These can be easily changed later if you change your mind by going to Settings > Mobile Data > Default Voice Line / Mobile Data.

If you’ve ordered an eSIM for a SIM only plan with us, you can also download your eSIM from My EE. Just follow the instructions in your confirmation email. If you’re using the My EE app, make sure you’re using the latest version. If you’re not it’s best to update first.

What if my eSIM QR code or iPhone camera is damaged?

If this is the case, don’t worry, you can still manually add the information contained within the QR code. When the Scan QR Code screen is open when you select Add Data Plan you’ll see an option to Enter Details Manually. There are two fields to fill in:

  1. SM-DP+ Address: enter
  2. Activation Code: this is unique to each eSIM pack and can be found on your eSIM pack underneath the set up instructions

You’ll also see a Confirmation Code field — this isn’t required and you should leave it blank.

How do I know which line my calls are on?

To start with all your contacts will be assigned to the line you chose as your default voice line during set up. If you want to change this, there’s an indicator within each contact that gives you the option to change which line you use for that contact.

If you're just entering a phone number straight into the keypad, you can select which line you call that number from in the options on screen.

For incoming calls, there is an indicator to show which line you're receiving the call on. The indicator is the first letter of the name you assigned to each line. If your labels are called Personal and Business, then the call indicator would be a or a B.

Can I use iMessage and Facetime on both lines?

Yes, from iOS 13 onwards, both lines can be used for iMessage and Facetime. To manage this go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.

Can I use data when I'm on a call?

If you're taking a call on the line that's not the same as your default data line, then data won't work unless you turn on Mobile Data Switching.

You can access this through Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Switching and it will automatically switch lines for mobile data when you're on a call.
